NETHERLANDS INSTITUTE FOR NEUROSCIENCE

The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN) is an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Its main activity is fundamental and strategic scientific research in the field ofneuroscience with an emphasis on brain research and research of the visual system.

Within the research unit Molecular Ophthalmogenetics, headed by Prof. Dr. A.A.B. Bergen, at the Netherlands Institute of Neuroscience there is a position open for a:

PhD Student in Molecular Neurogenetics (m/f)

38 hours a week

Project information:
In general, the project is embedded in a research line which investigates the molecular basis of neural aging and disease. Our group studies the retina, the highly defined and well studied neural tissue lining the back of the eye.
More specifically, this research project focusses on age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the most common form of untreatable loss of central vision in the Western world. In previous micro array studies on human retinal cells, we identified a set of genes and molecular pathways that may be crucial in the pathogenesis of this disease. In the current project, we will study the genetic and functional properties of these molecular targets in human case-control cohorts, retinal cell lines and genetically modified mice. The aim of the project is to clarify how these genes can be used to develop genomics-directed diagnostics, prevention or therapy of AMD.

Techniques to be applied:
Genetic snp analysis, siRNA based gene silencing, microscopy, cell culturing, functional assays.

Requirements:
We look preferably for a biologist with interest in the mechanisms underlying genetically determined neural disease.

Appointment:
This position involves a temporary appointment for a period of 4 years.

Application deadline:
1 December 2009. Starting date: 1 January 2010, or as soon as possible.
Salary:
The gross monthly salary coming with a full-time appointment will amount to 2.042,- in the first year to 2.612,- in the fourth year, P-scale, Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-Nederlandse Universiteiten), excluding 8% holiday pay and a 8.3% year-end bonus. We offer an extensive package of fringe benefits.

Work location:
The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (NIN), Amsterdam. The NIN is located next to the Academic Medical Centre. The NIN provides a stimulating environment and excellent infrastructure for researchers.

Information:
Further information can be obtained at our website (URL http://www.nin.knaw.nl) or from Prof. Dr. A.A.B. Bergen (020-5664592 or by e-mail a.bergen@nin.knaw.nl

Application:
Please, send a motivated application including your curriculum vitae to Prof. Dr. A.A.B. Bergen (NIN, Meibergdreef 47, 1105 BA Amsterdam, The Netherlands or by e-mail: a.bergen@nin.knaw.nl).
