Breast Pathology Fellowship 2010-USA

This Breast Pathology Fellowship is a Texas Medical Board-approved program offered by the Department of Pathology of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. It is a one-year fellowship with emphasis on the multi-disciplinary approach to breast pathology and in-depth training in diagnostic surgical pathology of the breast.

Goals and Objectives:
The main objectives of the program are to teach good diagnostic skills and sound knowledge of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the breast and to cultivate appreciation of a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of breast diseases.

Fellowship activities include review and sign-out of cases on a daily basis, review of outside consults, formulation of diagnoses, and dictation of reports, as well as gradually increasing responsibility in interpretation of breast tumor biomarkers by automated image analysis and molecular techniques such as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The fellow will work closely with the breast multidisciplinary team, actively participating in weekly conferences and providing service and consultation to clinicians in matters relating to breast diseases.

There will be opportunities during the fellowship for both independent and collaborative research, under the guidance of a faculty member, and the fellow will prepare research proposals, submit abstracts to scientific meetings, and prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

The fellow in this program will engage in teaching residents and clinical fellows and will also have the opportunity to rotate in other clinical specialties, such as breast imaging.

The Department of Pathology at UT Southwestern annually processes over 2500 breast specimens, including core biopsies, mastectomies, excision specimens, and outside consults.
Approximately 1200 ancillary tests for tumor markers such as: ER, PR, Her2Neu, Ki67, p53, basal markers, DNA ploidy by image analysis, FISH, and other molecular techniques are performed routinely.
The Breast Pathology Fellowship program offers exposure to this vast amount of learning material, with guidance provided by an exceptional faculty from multiple areas of the university.

Requirements:
Prospective candidates must have completed an ACGME-approved residency in anatomic pathology, must be board eligible or board certified in Anatomic or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology, and must be eligible for a medical license to practice in Texas by the beginning of the fellowship.

Salary:
The salary will be commensurate with the applicants level of training.
