Belgium: Post-Doc and PhD Positions in Physics and Astronomy

May 2010 – Post-Doc and PhD positions with CMS at LHC

The department of physics and astronomy of Ghent University, Belgium, is a member of the international CMS collaboration, which is building and operating the CMS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. LHC and CMS have started physics operations a few months ago, with CMS recording and analysing proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 7 TeV.

The Ghent group is involved in the RPC subsystem of the CMS muon detector and the high-level trigger system (HLT). Our physics research topics with CMS are in the areas of measurement of top-quark and Higgs-boson properties, and search for supersymmetry.

To strengthen our effort in these areas, we are seeking applications of qualified candidates for two Ph.D. student positions and two Post-Doc positions.

  1. Ph.D. student positions: Applicants will have completed a master (MSc) or 4-year honours bachelor degree (BSc, I or II.1) in physics by autumn 2010, and have a keen interest in working in an international environment. Frequent travel to CERN as well as a longer stay at CERN is foreseen .
  2. Post-Doc scholarship positions: We look for outstanding individuals with several years of experience in both instrumentation and data analysis of large-scale high-energy physics experiments and strong potential for outstanding achievement as an independent researcher. Duties include supervising students, contributing to detector construction, operations and data taking, and assuming a leading role in top-quark physics analyses and related areas. One position is based in Ghent, the second position is based at CERN .

For all positions, good command of the English language in both reading and writing is essential. The foreseen starting date is flexible but no later than Autumn 2010.

Each application should include:

  • Letter of introduction, stating the intended position (PhD student
or Post-Doc, choice of physics interest) and clearly indicating how
the criteria outlined in the above job advertisement are met.
  • Curriculum Vitae, including details of previous research, copies of
academic degrees and academic transcripts, achievements and other
professional work. For non-native English speakers, proof of command
of the English language is required.
  • List of professional publications, clearly identifying personal
contributions.

Applicants should arrange for at least two letters of recommendation to arrive at the address below before the closing date.

All application material should be send by (air) mail to:

Prof. Dr. Martin Grunewald
Department of physics and astronomy
University of Ghent
Proeftuinstraat 86
B-9000 Ghent
Belgium

or by e-mail, as a single pdf file not exceeding 20MB, to: Martin.Grunewald@cern.ch

Closing date for receipt of applications is July 15th, 2010.
