UK; PhD Vacancy in Photonics for Manufacturing
PhD Vacancy in Photonics for Manufacturing
School of Engineering and Physical Sciences
(UK or EU candidate)
Stipend: £13,290 per annum
Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship in the School of Engineering and Physical Science at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK (www.eps.hw.ac.uk). It is funded by Heriot-Watt University’s EPSRC-funded IMRC (Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre) which is currently undergoing substantial expansion. The Centre develops new technology and processes for the design and manufacture of high value, highly customised products with high IP content for the benefit of the global manufacturing industry.
The project will focus on photonics technologies for manufacturing applications. It will involve the development of new optical sensors for process monitoring and control of laser-based manufacturing processes. Both experimental and theoretical modelling skills will be required to construct and evaluate the performance of the optical sensor systems, as well as for application trials.
The student will become a member of the Optical Diagnostics Research Group (www.mec.hw.ac.uk/optical-diagnostics). You will carry out your research using cutting-edge technologies, supported by the facilities and expertise of a large group. The Optical Diagnostics Group is part of the Applied Optics and Photonics Research Group (www.aop.hw.ac.uk) at Heriot-Watt University, which comprises academic staff from Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Physics. Working at the interface between these traditional disciplines, the Group has earned an international reputation in fundamental engineering and science-based research, with widespread links to industry, a commitment to knowledge transfer and long-term collaborations with many leading research teams worldwide. The scale of activity at Heriot-Watt, from novel optical devices and new lasers through to their application to solve engineering problems, is unique within the UK.
The studentship comprises a grant of £13,290 per annum plus tuition fees for a maximum of 3.5 years. Applicants are welcome from UK and EU candidates (due to funding criteria) who already have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class degree or equivalent in engineering, physics or a related subject. Previous theoretical or practical experience in optics would be particularly welcome. The position is available immediately or to start no later than December 2009.
Interested candidates should e-mail their CV to Prof. Andrew Moore (a.moore@hw.ac.uk) AND fill in an online University application form: http://scholarships.hw.ac.uk/applicants/applicants.jsp
