UK; Funded PhD Studentship in Design for Healthcare

Posted in UK Scholarship on Oct 29, 2009

Applications are invited from excellent candidates for this PhD studentship in the School of Design at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). The studentship is funded by the Medical Research Council’s Lifelong Health and Wellbeing cross-council initiative to support multi-disciplinary research addressing factors across the life course that influence healthy ageing and wellbeing in later life. It will offer an exciting opportunity to become involved in a large-scale healthcare-related research project in GSA as part of a UK-wide team of researchers.

The studentship will form one aspect of a larger research project entitled ‘Promoting independence by involving users in rehabilitation through dynamic visualisation of biomechanical data’. Specifically, this studentship will be concerned with the visual communication of biomechanical mobility and exercise advice for the healthy older adult.

Candidates must have a First Class or Upper 2nd Class honours degree or a Masters qualification in a relevant discipline such as information visualisation, and virtual human modelling.

The studentship provides full fees for UK/EU applicants and a tax-free maintenance allowance of £13,290 per annum for 3 years. It is available for up to three years subject to satisfactory progress, and is due to start from 1st January 2010.

Due to the specific nature of this studentship, informal enquiries prior to application are encouraged and can be addressed to the Director of Studies for this studentship, Professor Alastair Macdonald, Senior Researcher School of Design at a.macdonald@gsa.ac.uk

Postgraduate application guidelines and an application form are available from:http://www.gsa.ac.uk/researchandpostgraduate/content/default.asp?page=s25_12 and http://www.gsa.ac.uk/researchandpostgraduate/content/default.asp?page=s37 Further details on applying for the studentship are available to download from:http://www.gsa.ac.uk/researchandpostgraduate/content/default.asp?page=s25_12_4 A completed application form should be emailed to Sally Maidment (s.maidment@gsa.ac.uk) or posted to Research & PG Office, The Glasgow School of Art, 6 Rose Street, Glasgow, G36RB, UK, quoting reference SoDMRC.
