UK; PhD Studentship in Polymer

Posted in UK Scholarship on Oct 13, 2008

Academic Supervisors: Dr Jeffrey Alcock
Duration: Three years
Award type: PhD

Supported by EPSRC, a studentship of up to £13,940 p.a. for 3 years plus fees* is available.

Cranfield University has an exciting multi-disciplinary research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research will focus on the development of the next generation of point-of-care devices (current examples of which are blood glucometers and pregnancy testers) for use in self-monitoring and testing medical applications. Such devices will need to be low cost, so that the financial barrier to their use is not high.

This project will investigate a modular approach to these future microfluidic devices, in which devices can be built up using interconnecting sub-components of desired functionalities. The research aims to look at the design and build a prototype of such modular point-of-care devices.

Wholly postgraduate, Cranfield University is a leading European institution for technology and applied science, with a global reputation for its research. The successful candidate will be based at Cranfield’s main campus in Bedfordshire.

Closing Date: 21st November 2008

Entry requirements
Applicants should have a first or second class UK honours degree, or equivalent in a science or applied science discipline.

Funding
*Supported by an EPSRC bursary, this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £13,940p.a. for three years dependent upon qualifications and experience.
